Abstract

This article analyzes the conceptual foundations and empirical evidence explaining the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and economic performance, emphasizing its relevance to textile firms and economic units in the Central Valleys of Oaxaca. An integrative narrative theoretical review is developed drawing on seminal and contemporary literature on entrepreneurial orientation, business performance measurement, and studies of Oaxaca’s craft and textile sector. The review indicates that entrepreneurial orientation is not a homogeneous attribute: innovativeness, proactiveness, and risk taking constitute the core of the classical conceptualization, whereas autonomy and competitive aggressiveness depend more strongly on the measurement approach and context. Accumulated evidence supports a positive association between entrepreneurial orientation and performance, although its magnitude and direction vary according to resources, environmental dynamism, and organizational characteristics. In Oaxaca, available studies suggest that innovativeness and proactiveness are especially relevant, while craft-business performance is also constrained by market access, financing, family organization, and environmental shocks. A conceptual model is proposed for future empirical research on textile firms in the Central Valleys, together with theoretical propositions suitable for subsequent testing.
